It’s Chili Time!
There is nothing like a hot crockpot full of chili brewing on a Sunday to make the house smell like home. We are expecting 3-5 inches of snow today (currently coming down) here in Ohio so I thought this was the perfect comfort food if we are going to be stuck here for the day.
I have perfected by own chili recipe over the years and added in different things, tried out different brands of beans and tomatoes and figured out the right mix for us. All spices and flavors can be changed to taste, we don’t eat ours too spicy but not too bland.
You have to start the crockpot early in the day so it can simmer all day for all of the flavors to soak in together. My husband even thinks that it tastes better the next day heated up.
You pick your own family favorite name brands or store brands of items I always go with a mix and try to get new fresh spices so the flavors are on point! You can never go wrong with this recipe, browning the hamburger is the longest part of prep, then you throw all of the items together, stir and let it simmer. Enjoy!
Here is a copy of Chili MY way:
Home cooked Chili
- 3 pounds ground cooked hamburger
- 2 cans chili beans in sauce (I use mild)
- 3 cans Red Gold diced tomatoes (with spices)
- 1 46 oz can tomato juice (you will not use it all)
- 2 8 oz cans tomato sauce
- 1 packet chili seasoning mix of your choice
- 2-4 tbsp chili powder to taste add more if needed
- 1 tbsp ground pepper
- 1 tbsp Hershey's cocoa powder for taste instructed by the mother in law
Add all ingredients together in your crockpot and mix. Add chili seasonings to your taste preference. Why is there Hershey’s Cocoa powder you ask? Good question. When I first got married I asked my mother in law for some tips on what all she put in her chili. She said add 1 tablespoon of Hershey’s’ Cocoa powder for taste and I’ve just always done it because she told me to lol. It has always turned out amazing with zero complaints so I continue on. The longer it simmers on low the better it will taste!
Change or add flavors to how spicy you and your people like it, hot pepper flakes and cayenne pepper can also be added in if you like it more spicy as well as using the chili beans in HOT sauce if you really want to fire up your chili. I also like to add some shredded cheese on top!
My chili is thick and hearty, not runny falling off of the spoon. We make our grilled cheese sandwiches buttered up with texas toast and 2 big fat slices of cheese to dip the chili. Some people prefer a peanut butter sandwich which I have NOT tried but I’ll keep on the backburner.
Send me a message after you make this chili and let me know if you enjoyed it or what you added in to spice it up!
