My husband’s grandmother Rhuie used to make this recipe for him growing up and after we were married he requested a jar of pickle juice saved in the fridge when the pickles were all eaten to use when he wanted to marinate a steak. It completely tenderizes the steak. I said “What???!! Ewwww”. Well Ewww was wrong! I could have 4-5 half full jars of pickle juice in my fridge minus the pickles at any given time.
It doesn’t taste like pickled meat, it gives it a slightly salty light pickle flavored meat that you will want to make again! I could honestly not believe it the first time I tried it. The taste completely melts in your mouth and my 10 year old daughter can’t get enough of it. We cook our steaks at a nice medium, not too red and no shoe leather like qualities and the perfect steak sits right in front of you after marinating it for at least half a day, a whole day is better to really break down the meat and soak it up within.
It is super easy and does not require any other spices unless
you want to add extra pepper to taste!
This steak was cooked to a good medium as per our preferences but you cook away at however you prefer your steak to taste. We actually do not have steaks often as the price of beef can be insane at the grocery store but these amish country bought steaks were a gift from the in-laws for watching their dog for a weekend and we saved them for a special evening!
Pickle Juice Marinated Steak - Rhuie's Recipe
My husband's grandmother Rhuie used to make this as a treat for him when he was little. The meat marinated all day and was one of his favorite meals to have when he stayed over at her house. The meat has a slight pickle taste that is subtle depending on the marinade time we usually do 7-8 hours at least and a T-bone or Ribeye cut works best.
Any brand of pickle juice from the jar will work, preferred Dill pickles for the best taste! Grill your steak to your preferred temperature and we like to add in some cooked mushrooms and a baked potato and we’ve got dinner!
If you need some grilling tips from an expert I highly recommend (and I own a copy) of Bobby Flay’s Grill It! recipe book you can get in hardcover or kindle. Lots of great recipes and easy to follow.
Not everyone can be the grillmaster, and at your own home in your own backyard with your rigged up grill that only works when you turn the knob one way and hold the wire another and kick it twice to get it to start up that’s the best kind of home cooking that makes memories you will be laughing about for years to come.
Grill one up and send me a message telling me what you think or any different twists you may have added to yours. We are always looking for new recipes to get out of the same old food during the week that we all seem to fall back on. We love to cook but there are days after work where a bowl of cereal will do for me because I’m so exhausted. Have a great week and grill it up!
